Franchise recruitment lead generation

The Online Franchise Lead Generation Puzzle

Every franchisor needs to generate leads to sell their franchise and there is no better place than the internet to reach a wide and varied audience of prospective franchisees.  With virtually every household in Britain plugged in to the World Wide Web you can be sure of one thing and that is:  Most people research online before buying a franchise.

However, establishing a presence online is not an easy task and ensuring your own website generates enough targeted leads for you to hit your monthly sales targets is almost impossible.  Competition for each and every website visitor is high and you will be up against some seasoned veterans in the business, many of whom are either experts in search engine optimization (SEO) or hire experts in the field to ensure they have high placements within the big three, Google, Yahoo and Bing.

This is where external advertising comes into play and there are 2 main areas to look into:

1. Advertising on dedicated franchise portals.
2. Advertising in the Search Giants Sponsored Listings.

So let's take a look into the world of UK Business Franchises advertising on the franchise portals.

First of all you would be amazed how many of them there are out there.  There are dozens of portals all vying for your business and some out perform others ten fold.  They all market themselves as being found at the top of Google and yes some indeed are but many get so little website traffic you are unlikely to get much bang for your buck.  But how can you tell which are likely to perform well for you without spending tens of thousands advertising on them all?  You do some simple checks:
  1. Check their Alexa Ranking.  Alexa is a good rough gauge on how popular a website is.  Quite simply, if a website has a ranking of more than 1 million they really do not generate much website traffic.  Ideally you want to be creating a list of all the franchise portals you can find and compare their Alexa rankings.  I would recommend choosing the top 4, all of whom should have an Alexa ranking of less than 500,000.  Alexa gives a countUP of what they believe are the most popular websites in the world, Google would be number 1 and a particular franchise website you are looking at may be 250,000, meaning they are the 250,000th most popular site in the world.  When you get into the millions, it is unlikely the website in question gets a great deal of visitors and in turn is not going to generate you many leads so the lower the count the better.

  2. Check their Google Page Rank.  A slightly controversial one this but in my eyes very meaningful.  Again this is a measure of popularity - Google gives a value to every link pointing towards your website, this is called Page Rank Flow where there is a % of "Juice" that can flow from one page to another across the Web, the higher your Page Rank the more popular your website is.  For the franchise portals you really want to be seeing a minimum of PR3, this means that they have some decent inbound links and have been doing their job when it comes to search engine marketing.  If you see a website with PR0 or PR1 then you can be fairly confident that it has done very little in the way of any SEO and as such is unlikely to be generating much website traffic or be featured at the top of the search engines for all but a few niche phrases.

  3. Check their WHOIS.  This can let you know how long they have been in business for, or at least, how long their particular domain has been active.  If they are marketing themselves as having been in business for 5 years but their WHOIS record says registered in 2009 then you know this particular website has only been up and running for a year or so, not enough time to have broken into the top performing franchise lead generating portals.

  4. Check Google for the top franchise phrases.  Do some basic checks by searching Google.co.uk for both generic franchise phrases such as "Franchise Opportunities" and phrases in your niche, for example. "internet based franchises".  Usually the top website will appear in the top ten for most franchise related phrases, for those portals that you cannot find, if you cannot find them how is a prospect going to find them and in turn find your franchise?
Using these 4 checks you can see how long a website has been live, how much SEO they have done, how popular their website is with regards to traffic and how high they feature in Google.co.uk.  If you enter all this into a spreadsheet you will quickly be able to find out which are the top 4 portals and which will give you the best value for money and the most leads.

So what about the sponsored listings?  In fact: What are the sponsored listings?

Sponsored listings are where your text based advert will appear either to the right of the search results or above the search results.  They can also appear within other related webpages which do Google advertising.  There is a bidding process and the higher you bid the more prominent a position your advert will be displayed in when a search engine user is looking for a particular result.

The sponsored listings are an excellent way of getting your franchise seen at the top of the search engines, they are a surefire way of buying placement and you WILL generate website traffic from running this type of advertising campaign.  However, there is a lot of competition and you need to tailor your campaign carefully to ensure that you are not wasting your advertising budget.

An example of a good campaign would be where you have done your keyword research and established the main phrases you want to feature for, as well as some less popular longer phrases you want to feature for.  There is likely to be less competition for the longer phrases so this will keep you cost per click down for targeted phrases where as for the shorter more popular phrases your bid for placement will be higher.  Once you have your targeted phrases you want to set up landing pages.  A landing page is a page within your website created specifically to capture the prospects details.  It should offer a very visible capture form as well as all the details you believe the prospect needs to convert from visitor to form filler, The Sell.  This is very important as you are paying per visit and for every visitor that leaves without filling out the form you are reducing your conversion rate and increasing your lead generating costs.

An example of a bad campaign would be where you simply select all the obvious phrases related to your industry and point your campaign to your homepage.  This is likely to result in a higher cost per click and higher bounce rate with a reduced conversion rate of visitor to form filler.

So to recap, to make the best our of your sponsored listing campaigns you want to:

1. Do your keyword research.
2. Create a landing page with a visible capture form and a well worded sell.

Franchise lead generation is not an inexpensive process, many companies are after their slice of your budget, even the big Google, and you need to play it carefully to make sure you are getting the best out of your budget.  Ensuring that you are advertising on the right portals with good targeted website traffic and making the best out of your sponsored listing campaigns is an important key in getting the most out of your spend.  By utilizing some of the above advice you should be able to at least make a good start without too many mistakes but there is also a lot to be said about your particular niche which you will learn with experience.
