Delia's Method-Ology
In 2006, YE Subscriber Delia Butler bought into a franchise that made use of her accounting background and business acumen. Here she explains why franchising was the perfect answer to starting her own business. What is your business background? I spent 20 years as a chartered accountant with one of the big four accountancy practices, splitting my time between London and Manchester, where I ran the financial services department. During this time I gained a wealth of business experience, dealing with huge multinational PLCS to one-man bands, with a focus on advising and helping management buyout teams. Tell me about the franchise Oiogy Business Coaches was set up in 2004 by three guys from the North West and now operates internationally with franchisees in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. We specialise in working with business owners and management teams of small to medium sized businesses and small corporate organisations. Most successful business owners I talk to ate frustrated with their business in some way. The dissatisfaction tends to involve profitability as the business grows, the effectiveness of staff, or getting stuck on how to get their business to the next stage. I help to make that change happen, using professional coaching skills and the introduction of proven business processes - delivering motivation, improvement and profitability that lasts. How did you get involved in buying a franchise? It was a very conscious decision to leave the professional accountancy world and take stock of how I wanted to develop my career. I recognised that client involvement in an advisory role were the elements I most enjoyed from my previous life - plus the independence of running my own portfolio of clients. With a growing family, I needed flexibility, but having left an organisation where support and advice was available at every stage, I knew I would be much more effective if I had a similar support network. Franchising was the obvious answer for me. What's so great about franchising? There are many benefits to franchising, but the key one has to be the ability to run my own business and build on my strengths, with the support of the founders who have 'walked the talk.' My fellow franchisees are also a great source of knowledge and provide ;e a huge motivation for me to succeed. What skills do you need to run a successful franchise? Twelve months on, I know that the key skills needed to succeed are a real belief in the product or service you are delivering. Even when you are part of a franchise with training and support available, you need a great deal of self-motivation and persistence just like anyone starting a business. Is franchising a good route to business? Buying a franchise is a very effective way to start in business if you want to build one around an existing product or service, because of the training and ongoing support available. Even if you have little knowledge of running your own business there is a safety net. I also found the training and the methodology a very compelling advantage. What are your plans for the future? I am only a year into my franchise and it's been a steep learning curve; but establishing Ology's reputation as the world's leading business coaching organisation is a priority for both me and my colleagues. My personal aims are focused not only on building a busy business coaching practice with a number of like-minded associates, but one which is based on referrals and high levels of customer satisfaction. We have succeeded I helping our clients to build healthy, profitable and growing businesses. |
