When Benjamin Disraeli uttered the now immortal words “there are three kinds of lies – lies, damned lies and statistics”, he might have been referring to many peoples’ CVs.
Take mine, for instance.
If you were to take the trouble to study it, you would find ample evidence of a successful twenty year career in senior management, gained with one of the country’s biggest blue chip service providers.
Actually, that statement is factually correct. However in true CV fashion it only tells part of the story - because if you really wanted to know the full picture, then you would also need to know about the things that don’t traditionally feature on the average CV.
In other words, the cock ups - and believe me, I’ve made as many as the next manager.
• I’ve suffered the consequences of poor recruitment
• Failed to delegate appropriately
• Lost sales through overpricing
• Won sales at no margin because the costs were incorrect
• Failed to meet project deadlines
Even worse, for a number of years I thought EBITDA was a nasty medical condition!
And the point of this cathartic confession? Well, simply to demonstrate that my business experience is a rounded experience, a mixture of exasperation, disappointment, occasional failure but ultimately hard earned success.
Add to this a body that’s been battered by a life time of playing rugby, together with a wife and four children (capable of battering body and soul!) and perhaps you can start to see that as a business coach in Lancaster I bring real work and life experience to the table.
