The Pygmalion Effect
September 2008 Pygmalion was a king in Greek mythology. He was also an exceptional sculptor who envisioned an image of a beautiful woman. Such was his picture of beauty that he was able to create an ivory statue of her. This statue was so lifelike that Pygmalion fell in love with it. His love for the statue became so strong that it caught the attention of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Upon seeing his predicament she turned the statue into a real woman. So, what do you ask, has that got to do with business. Well being a leader it gives us examples of two important elements of managing staff: expectation and transformation. If in your position of authority as a manager of people, you have a picture for your team and if you continually treat your team in accordance with your picture, they will eventually get this picture! They will then act and performas you see them and as you treat them. It is extremely important to realise how powerful you are as a leader to them. How you see and treat your people determines how they act. Now let’s just take some time out and think, but be honest with yourself. How do I view my staff? What do I expect from them? Your thoughts on the above can determine the success or failure of you business. Now in these difficult times people are probably the most important commodity of your business, if you can call them a commodity.
