Massive Rise in UK Business Coaching Popularity

Recent years have seen an explosive growth in business coaching: A recent survey* shows that 80% of respondents now use coaching in their organisations. As a tool that can help businesses to be competitive, as well as help people achieve their potential, business coaching seems to offer a win–win solution for all.

So what IS fuelling this massive rise in UK business coaching popularity?

The market was originally saturated by people deciding to call themselves life coaches because it was the buzz word, but they had little or no relevant experience or training. Couple that with the fact that what they delivered was poor and unstructured and had no tangible measurement. Gradually a vision starts to grow of coaching being woolly and not adding much value. Equally those that did make the effort to embrace some physical coaching skills struggled to generate income because they had no concept of how to interpret what was essentially academic theory into a commercial proposition. So broadly the opinion is ‘sounds good in theory but where the value is?’

However many larger organisations are really starting to embrace the concept of ongoing effective coaching as the key element of people development and improved performance, as opposed to traditional interventions such as training or consultancy. Coaching not only acknowledges (which the other two approaches don’t) but embraces the fact that personal life and business life clash a thousand times a day and fundamentally affect (often adversely) the other. Therefore having an effective ongoing coaching relationship which facilitates improvement of the individual’s management of the work/personal life maelstrom leads to happier and better performance in each.

So our opinion coupled with historical indications from our slightly more advanced (in the coaching arena) cousins across the water, is that the growth of effective business coaching is unstoppable. The natural next step is that the client will is becoming more educated about coaching and is starting to demand better and more consistent, measurable delivery. Consequence? – watch the gradual demise of the untrained or self accredited life coach and watch the growth of the professionally trained and accredited business coach who can prove results.
