Are We Really So Resistant To Change?
August 2008 In the past two decades, a company’s workforce has become increasingly important to business success. So much so that most senior executives now view people and workforce issues as a critical competitive differentiator and one of their top agenda items. It has also been a period of massive change within corporate arena with a focus on leaner more customer focussed organisations coupled with mergers, acquisitions and downsizing affecting staff in most organisations. It is now well recognised that change management is a basic skill in which most leaders and managers need to be competent. Why is it then that so many companies seem to struggle to effectively manage change? There is no shortage of methodologies and these are well documented. Unfortunately many of these have their emphasis on process and project management. Equally unfortunate and unhelpful is the pervasive belief that everyone is “resistant to change”. Clearly people take time to come to terms with change, but we are inherently flexible and resilient as a species. Think about it. Our lives are punctuated with change. We start school, leave, get a job, get married, get divorced, have children, move house etc. It’s important for managers and leaders that recognise that:
